More Information

Vigneron Adrian Hoffmann and winemaker Chris Ringland have been working together for more than 25 years to develop the Hoffmann Vineyard signature labels; Reservation Shiraz, North Barossa Shiraz, Dimchurch Shiraz and Hoffmann Vineyard Shiraz.

Occasionally, a specific Shiraz vineyard from one of the 12 local growers that contribute to Chris Ringland Reservation may be singled out. Doris Block is an opportunity to portray the complexity and unique characteristics of the vintage. When Adrian and I taste the barrels to classify our wines every now and then we’ll decide to bottle a miniscule amount of one of these special lots as a stand alone offering.

Notes from the 2015 Vintage

During the Winter of 2014, below average rainfall and a dry Spring contributed to slightly lower yields for the 2015 vintage. Excellent weather conditions during flowering resulted in good bunch development and medium sized berries. 2015 produced rich, super-ripe Barossa Shiraz, creating powerful wines that continue to surprise in their graceful development. The vintage drew to a close in mid-April, after which some significant rainfall set the vineyards up for their Winter rest.

Tasting Note

Opaque red-black, with a scarlet rim.
Initial aromas of freshly baked chocolate brownie, Blackberry jam on toast and etherial aromas of vanilla slice. A Barossa valley bakery in a glass.
Initial impression is of very rich dark chocolate flavours, together with baking spices and sweet vanilla. The structure is unctuous, soft and very powerful.

Overall, the 2015 vintage is a great, classic Barossa Shiraz outcome, albeit in the strong, flavour ripe spectrum. These wines will age deceptively well because of excellent flavour and tannin ripeness.

The Development of Hoffmann Vineyard Unique Selections

In any given season, if Adrian observes something special developing with parcels of Grenache, Mataro, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese or Zinfandel, he’ll propose that we ferment a special batch.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Often we’ll discover that we have something very special in the cellar.

Occasionally, a specific Shiraz vineyard from one of the 12 local growers that contribute to Chris Ringland Reservation and Chris Ringland North Barossa may be singled out and that is how the Doris Block Shiraz vineyard bottling came to be.

It’s an opportunity to portray the complexity and unique characteristics of the vintage. We’ll taste the barrels to classify our wines and every now and then we’ll decide to bottle one of these special lots as a stand alone offering. The 2017 Cabernet/Mataro blend derived its inspiration from a wine that Chris makes in Spain, Bodegas El Nido “Clio”. Look out for possible bottlings of Carignan, Sangiovese and Zinfandel in the future.

It may never be repeated, or it may return for an encore performance every now and then.

We’ll usually bottle these special offerings under the “Limit Lodge” label, although sometimes the name of the individual vineyard (for example, Doris Block Shiraz) will be used.
