The First 11 vintages of Clio & El Nido

Clio 2002-2012

Clio 2002  **(*)

Appearance: Opaque black, garnet rim.
Aroma: Whiffs of toast, smoke, bitumen and spicy chorizo, give way to floral ( violet ) notes.
Palate: Moderate acidity and mature tannins continue to hold the structure harmoniously together. Flavours reminiscent of black tea, with soft, sweet red fruits. Fully mature.

Clio 2003  **

Appearance: Very deep red, garnet rim.
Aroma: Sweet cherry conserve overlaid with mountain herbs ( thyme, rosemary, savoury ), minerals and forest floor aromatics.
Palate: Somewhat of an odd wine out. Mountain herb flavours persist on the palate, gentle red fruits. Quite developed. Solid tannin structure holding the amalgam together well. Fully mature.

Clio 2004 *****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Garnet rim.
Aroma: Blackberry liqueur, mineral oil. Opulent and rich.
Palate: Rich and powerful, with black fruits interwoven around robust tannins with a very big, full bodied structure. Solid acidity is ensuring continued development. Still young.

Clio 2005  ****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Crimson rim.
Aroma: Blackberry conserve, mountain herbs, minerals and sweet toasty vanillin.
Palate: Bituminous, complex and rich. Black fruits. Soft and supple structure. Tannins beginning to develop. Mature.

Clio 2006  ***

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Crimson rim.
Aroma: Milk chocolate, honey and sweet vanillin.
Palate: Lively and soft. The bright acidity and developed tannins form a sensual, complex combination. Becoming mature.

Clio 2007  ****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Sweet black plum jam, chocolate and vanillin.
Palate: Still closed and youthful. Rich and opulent, with powerful un-evolved tannins. Still young.

Clio 2008  *****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Garnet rim.
Aroma: Sweet, black fruit liqueur gives way to dusty vanillin and smoky notes.
Palate: Closed, dense, robust. massive tannin structure. Still very young.

Clio 2009  ***(*)

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Black mixed berry conserve. Dusty vanillin oak overlay.
Palate: Quite powerful still, but beginning to show development with a gentle, harmonious structure. The fruit is still sweet, but the wine is beginning to show maturity.

Clio 2010  ****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Juicy red berries, dark chocolate, sweet vanillin and whiffs of smoke.
Palate: Rich, powerful and un-evolved. Big tannins, great structure. Young.

Clio 2011  ***(*)

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Blackstrap molasses and liquorice. Smoke, vanillin, blueberry conserve with a hint of aniseed. Palate: Very distinctive amalgam of liquorice, toast notes and big, solid tannins. Not a massive wine. Well poised. Still young.

Clio 2012  ( pre-bottling sample )

Appearance: Opaque black. Purple rim
Aroma: Bitumen, black fruit. Strong, toasty sweet oak vanillin dominates.
Palate: A big blast of sweet fruit, minerals and dusty citrus vanillin.

El Nido 2002-2012

El Nido 2002  *****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Garnet rim.
Aroma: Distinctive developmental characteristics od pickled black olive, toast, red berries and forest floor.
Palate: Showing great complexity. Dried tangerine peel, star anise and red fruits. The structure is still massive. Still young.

El Nido 2003  ****(*)

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Garnet rim.
Aroma: Closed. Bituminous aromatics yield to sweet berry liqueur.
Palate: Amazingly youthful. Bright red berries, lively acidity and massive tannin backbone. Young.

El Nido 2004 *****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Garnet rim.
Aroma: Warm sun baked bitumen opens up to sweet vanillin, forest floor nuances and base notes of blackberry liqueur.
Palate: Impenetrable black fruits. Mineral oil. Massive, yet seamless soft tannins. Elegant. Young.

El Nido 2005  ****(*)

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Blackberry jam, sweet dusty vanillin, mineral notes.
Palate: A blockbuster! Starting to show some maturity, especially with the tannin structure. Becoming mature.

El Nido 2006  ****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Bitumen, minerals, aniseed and toasty vanillin.
Palate: Soft and sweet fruited. The tannins are big, but not massive. Just beginning to show development of maturity. Solid. Fresh acidy holding well. Becoming mature.

El Nido 2007  *****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Creamy milk chocolate, red berries. Still very youthful.
Palate: Surprisingly poised. Massive, yet fresh. Big, very solid tannins. Young.

El Nido 2008  *****!!

Appearance: Opaque black. Scarlet/purple rim.
Aroma: Bitumen, black fruits, dark chocolate. Whiff of vanillin.
Palate: Massive and dramatic. Ultra sweet fruit. Jammy, raisins and monumental tannins. Very young.

El Nido 2009  ****(*)!

Appearance: Opaque, black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Black fruit jam. Roasted coffee. Sweet, dusty vanillin.
Palate: Very solid yet beautifully poised. Closed. Massive tannins. Very young.

El Nido 2010  ****

Appearance: Opaque, red/black. Scarlet rim.
Aroma: Black fruit. Minerals. Sweet vanillin. Coffee roast.
Palate: Massive, yet soft. Almost restrained. Structure shows great potential. Young.

El Nido 2011  *****

Appearance: Opaque, black. Purple rim.
Aroma: Black fruit conserve, blueberry liqueur, liquorice and sweet vanillin.
Palate: Profound. Very powerful. Un-evolved. Very young.

Appearance: Opaque, black. Purple rim.
Aroma: Impenetrable black fruit. Strong, toasty oak vanillin. Minerals.
Palate: Very closed. Sweet fruit, jam and raisins. Very young.
