Spanish Wines

In 2001 I was invited to participate in the development of two new winemaking projects in Spain. Beginning with the 2002 vintage, I became a partner and consultant to Bodegas Alto Moncayo in the D.O. of Campo de Borja and Bodegas El Nido in D.O Jumilla. I am proud to say that these small Bodegas have gone on to develop  enthusiastic following, both within Spain and also in the USA and Europe. After more than ten years of hard work, I am delighted to be able to offer allocations of these wines in Australia.

El NidoAlto Moncayo

Bodegas El Nido was established in collaboration with the Gil family of Bodegas Juan Gil. We utilise mature plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, together with ancient Monastrell ( Mataro ) selections from the mountain valleys North of Jumilla. Clio is composed from 60-70% Monastrell, with finishing touches of Cabernet and Syrah. The individual parcels are matured for 24 Months in an eclectic collection of new American and French barrels. The wine benefits from a year of bottle maturation before release.

The wines of Bodegas Alto Moncayo are produced exclusively from Garnacha ( Grenache ), the small berried, deeply coloured ancient clones of Aragona. We utilise individual, bush vine vineyards from the sub-regions of Pozuelo, Ambel and Tabuenca, at altitudes ranging from 300 to 800 metres. In keeping with my Barossa experience, the grapes are vinified in small open fermenters and basket pressing is used to gently obtain the pressings from the marc. Veraton is composed from more fruit forward parcels and receives just a gentle touch of oak. Alto Moncayo components receive 24 Months maturation in 100% new American and French oak hogsheads and barricas. Aquilon represents a selection of the very finest barrels from the vintage.
